The Skellefte River (or
Skellefteälven in Swedish) is one of the major Norrland rivers. It
sources in Norrbotten County, also known as the Swedish Lappland.
The Skellefte drains the Hornavan, Uddjaur and Storavan lakes and then
flows south-east, passing through the town Skellefteå (which
gives it its name).
The Skellefte discharges in the Gulf of Bothnia.
The Skellefte is 410 kilometres long.
The Skellefte has a number of hydro electric plants on it.
There are several tributaries to the river the main ones are listed
below.
The Skellefte is a popular destination for anglers. Salmons and trout
have been put into the river to compensate for the water power plants.
Especially popular is the town of Skellefteå, known as "Fishing
City".
